The Year 1964 Plymouth Sands ......... Hey Day (There's a pun in there, You'll see!)
Sumner and Phyllis Joyce had a vision to operate a family camp ground. After visiting a few camps for sale,
they decide to look at land to build into the Family Camping Area of their dreams.
The parcel of land now known as Plymouth Sands, was nothing more than a hayfield, but the Joyces were able to envision
the office, bath house, and individual camp sites. They purchased the property in September of 1963 and proceeded with the
groundwork.
All the trees found within the grounds were lovingly planted by Sumner, Phyllis, and their children. Camping in the early
years was primitive and open. Campers met and greet each other warmly. Consequently, lifetime friendships ensued. A handful
of our core seasonals have been camping with us in excess of 30 years.
It is wonderful to see these families return each year. Over the years, children of our original campers have settled into
their own seasonal spot. We are honored to witness and be a part of the growth of our camp family.
In 1973, Sumner passed away leaving a legacy of a hard won dream. In 1982, Phyllis re-married to Claude Gould. A camper
could know the day of the week by what Claude was doing for that day. Claude was a very meticulous man. He had his duties
and schedules down to a science.
In 1996, Claude passed away too. Phyllis, having lost two wonderful men acquired the help of her son David Joyce.
David became her right hand man and heir in 2003 when Phyllis joined her husbands in death.
David Joyce and his wife Linda have been operating the campground ever since.
